Glycols

Glycols are organic compounds containing two or more hydroxyl groups. The simplest glycol is ethylene glycol, which contains two hydroxyl groups.

Types of Glycols

There are many different types of glycols. The most commonly used glycols are the following:

  • Ethylene glycol: Used in antifreeze and coolants.
  • Propylene glycol: Used in foods, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
  • Butylene glycol: Used in paints, varnishes and inks.
  • Glycerol: Used in foods, medicines and cosmetics.

Usage Areas of Glycols

Glycols are used in many different industrial and commercial applications. The most common uses are as follows:

  • Antifreeze and coolants: Ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are used in antifreeze and coolants to protect engines from overcooling.
  • Foods: Propylene glycol and glycerol are used as humectants, flavourings and thickeners in foods.
  • Cosmetics: Propylene glycol and glycerol are used as moisturisers and emollients in cosmetics.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Propylene glycol and glycerol are used as solvents and carriers in pharmaceuticals.
  • Paints, varnishes and inks: Butylene glycol is used as a solvent and thinner in paints, varnishes and inks.
