pH Regulators
pH Regulators are substances used to regulate acidity or alkalinity. There are uses and types in different areas.
Areas of Use
- Soils: Soil pH directly affects the nutrient uptake of plants. The appropriate pH level is essential for the healthy growth of plants. pH regulators are used to bring the soil pH to the ideal level.
- Pools: The pH of pool water should be between 7.2-7.6. Low or high pH values can cause pool water to become cloudy, reduce the effectiveness of chemicals and cause skin irritation. pH regulators are used to balance the pH of pool water.
- Foods: The pH of food affects its properties such as colour, taste and texture. It is also important to balance the pH to prevent food spoilage. pH regulators are used to adjust the pH of foods.
- Water Treatment: The pH of water is an important stage of the purification process. pH regulators increase the effectiveness of the purification process by bringing the pH of the water to an ideal level.
Types
- Acidic pH Regulators: Used to lower soil pH. Sulphuric acid, nitric acid and phosphoric acid are the most commonly used acidic pH regulators.
- Basic pH Regulators: Used to increase soil pH. Calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and potassium hydroxide are the most commonly used basic pH regulators.
- Natural pH Regulators: Natural substances such as compost, lime, gypsum and wood ash can also be used as pH regulators.
Triethanolamine
Also known as TEA for short, it is an organic compound used in a variety of industrial and consumer products.
Chemical properties
- It is a colourless or slightly yellow, viscous liquid.
- It is classified as both a tertiary amine and a triol (a triol is a molecule containing three alcohol groups).
Uses
- Surfactant production: It is used in the production of surfactants such as emulsifiers.
- Cosmetics: It is used to regulate the pH level and increase the consistency of products.
- Detergents and cleaning products: Facilitates the removal of grease and dirt.
- Antifreezes: Used as a corrosion inhibitor in coolants.
- Paint and ink industry: Used to improve the adhesion of paints and inks.
- Concrete production: It can be used as an additive to concrete mix.
